Giving Jesus a ride to school...
For about two years now, I have been trying to take kids to their high school on Mondays, but for some reason kids wouldn't show up, they transferred schools, they seemed disinterested, etc. About 3 months ago, I finally found two boys who were interested in going. One of the boys used to be a student of mine when I taught 1st grade in 2001/2002 school year. A few weeks the other boy got in trouble and had to move from his Grandma's back with his Mom. I am careful to not have only one minor in my car with me, so I was left again not being able to take them to school. I went for 3 weeks without taking my past student to school. I believed taking him to school was a God thing, so I searched again for another kid to ride with us. One of the boys in the neighborhood mentioned a girl who I am with often, but just didn't think to take her with us. When he mentioned her name, I knew that it was a right fit. The wonderful thing about these two that I am taking, both of them were students in my first grade class when I was teaching. They were the worst two kids in my class. They were always in trouble and most of the time fighting with each other. We had many confrontations, trips to the office, calls made and letters written to their parents. I went round and round with these two and they gave me trouble on a daily basis, but I loved them dearly. God has always drawn me to the worst ones. But now, over the years God began to restore and rebuild my relationship with them. Today was the first day I took them to school. They were pretty quiet, but it felt like God was sitting in the car with us. I could sense that He was linking our hearts together and that He was softening their hearts. We got to their school and I told them, "Ok, my darlings. Don't give your teachers any trouble and have a good day. I love you." I pulled away from the high school and could just feel the Presence of God in my car. I don't know what it is about these Monday trips to East Side High School, but they are so precious to me and I believe to God as well. I think when I pick them up, Jesus gets in the car too.
